ABOUT US

Mina R. Khalil, lawyer and principal, heads MRK Law P.C., a boutique law firm with deep roots in Peel and Halton Region, servicing clients all over Ontario. Mina prides himself on finding efficient, practical, and cost-effective solutions to his clients’ problems. Equally comfortable in the board room and the court room, Mina relies on his wealth of experience as a lawyer and serial entrepreneur to negotiate timely and satisfactory resolutions for clients. When the time calls for it, however, Mina is a tenacious litigator willing to take matters through to trial. Mina's practice currently focuses primarily on criminal and quasi criminal defence litigation, and civil litigation.

As a Mississauga criminal defence lawyer, Mina is a firm believer that everyone deserves a second chance, and that people can change for the better. He relies on this overarching philosophy when he is defending clients facing criminal charges. He works vigorously to review disclosure, fill in the missing gaps, and craft the best possible defence for his client. Where appropriate, Mina will negotiate with the crown to have charges stayed or withdrawn, or enter into plea deals that help clients limit or avoid incarceration. Mina accepts legal aid certificates for most criminal matters. Mina has conducted several contested motions, applications, sentencing and bail hearings, and trials at the Ontario Court of Justice and the Superiour Court of Justice.

Mina also has extensive experience with representing youth involved in the criminal justice system and has first hand knowledge of the unique elements involved with representing young accused. He has conducted trials in youth court in the Ontario Court of Justice and has been involved in complex pleas and sentencing hearings that engaged the differing principles of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Mina also has extensive experience in civil litigation and dispute resolution, with a particular emphasis on commercial and shareholder disputes,  real estate disputes, and employment disputes  He has been instrumental in tactfully resolving many shareholder and partnership disputes, commercial lease disputes, and business related disputes for his clients. He has represented both employees and employers in workplace litigation and dispute resolution, including constructive and wrongful dismissal, termination for cause, and discrimination and human rights violations.

Early on in his practice, Mina gained extensive experience in transactional matters and represented first time home buyers, sophisticated real estate investors, corporations, and institutional and private lenders in closing a high volume of residential and commercial real estate purchase, sale, and mortgage transactions. Although Mina currently restricts his practice to litigation and dispute resolution, his first hand knowledge of the mechanics of real estate transactions has proven to be helpful when assisting clients in real estate related litigation and dispute resolution.

Mina's barrister experience as a litigator gives him a different perspective when assisting clients with transactional matters. This allows him to anticipate potential pitfalls and take a proactive approach when drafting contracts or closing deals. Because of his unique skillset, Mina is routinely called on by clients to advise corporations and small business owners on corporate formations and structuring, including the formation of professional corporations, drafting and negotiating a variety of shareholder agreements and contracts, mergers and acquisitions, estate planning, employment matters, dispute resolution, and for providing ongoing general legal advice.

When Mina is not in court, he is usually preparing for a contested motion, or trial, meeting with clients, or preparing for and meeting with opposing counsel. When he is not in the office or in court, Mina enjoys spending time with his wife and two children and usually spends his  weekends frantically driving the family around to the ever increasing soccer, hockey, figure skating, or piano practices, recitals, or competitions. Sometimes you might spot Mina letting out his frustration with opposing counsel by weight lifting at his local gym
